OpenAI Shuts Down Sora and Ends Its Disney Deal Along With It
In a surprise announcement on March 24, OpenAI confirmed it is discontinuing Sora, its standalone AI video generation app, as well as the Sora API. OpenAI is shuttering the standalone app to focus on other priorities.
"As we focus and compute demand grows, the Sora research team continues to focus on world simulation research to advance robotics that will help people solve real-world, physical tasks," an OpenAI spokesperson said.
The shutdown also ends the company's high-profile partnership with Walt Disney Co., which had included plans for a $1 billion equity stake. Downloads peaked at around 3.33 million in November 2025 and had fallen to just over 1.1 million by February 2026, suggesting the product was already losing momentum before the decision was made.
Compute costs reportedly ran into the tens of millions per day, making the economics unsustainable at any consumer-viable price point. (Source: Bloomberg)

Google Launches Gemini 3.1 Flash Live for Real-Time Voice and Vision AI

On March 26, Google released Gemini 3.1 Flash Live via the Gemini API and Google AI Studio, a model purpose-built for real-time, low-latency voice and vision interactions in 90-plus languages.
Compared to earlier models, Gemini 3.1 Flash Live offers lower latency and better acoustic understanding, distinguishing speech from background noise more effectively. It also surpasses the prior 2.5 Flash Native Audio model in recognizing pitch and pace, resulting in smoother conversations.
Developers building live customer service agents, voice-enabled assistants, and multilingual call-center tools are the primary audience. The release reflects Google's broader push to make agentic, real-time AI deployments practical at scale, going beyond text and moving toward continuous, ambient AI experiences embedded in voice interfaces. Apple Is Reportedly Building a ChatGPT-Style Siri for iOS 27
News circulated this week that Apple has internally shifted its Siri strategy from incremental feature upgrades toward building a full conversational AI assistant comparable to ChatGPT, targeting iOS 27.
Apple has been outpaced by Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic in core AI assistant capability for nearly two years, and the company is now under clear pressure from its own developer base and enterprise customers who increasingly default to third-party AI tools instead of Siri. (Source: Bloomberg)
Amazon Enters the Home Robot Market with Its Acquisition of Fauna Robotics
Amazon confirmed on March 24 that it has acquired Fauna Robotics, a New York-based startup founded by former Meta and Google engineers, that builds small humanoid robots designed for everyday home and social environments. Fauna's employees, including its two founders, will join Amazon in New York City, becoming part of Amazon's Personal Robotics Group. (Source: TechCrunch)
Cursor's New Coding Model Was Secretly Built on a Chinese Open-Source AI
A controversy unfolded in the developer community around March 23–24 after Cursor launched its Composer 2 coding model, marketing it as frontier-level proprietary intelligence. Technical analysis revealed that Cursor's internal model identifiers were highly correlated with Kimi K2.5, a Chinese open-source model originally released in January 2026.
Cursor executives eventually acknowledged that Composer 2 used Kimi K2.5 as a base, clarifying that roughly 25% of the compute power was derived from the base model, while 75% came from Cursor's proprietary reinforcement learning and pre-training. (Source: Techcrunch )
MCP Crosses 97 Million Installs as Agentic Tool Infrastructure Reaches Scale
Anthropic's Model Context Protocol, the open standard that allows AI agents to connect to external tools and data sources, has now been installed more than 97 million times. The figure, cited across developer communities and tech publications this week, reflects just how rapidly the infrastructure layer for agentic AI has grown since MCP's release. Major platforms including Figma, Salesforce, Google Workspace, and dozens of enterprise software providers have now shipped native MCP integrations. ( Source: AI invest )
Figma Opens Its Design Canvas to AI Agents
Figma launched the open beta of its MCP server with write access, allowing AI coding agents to design directly inside Figma files for the first time. Through Figma's MCP server, agents can now write directly to your Figma files, extending the standards you've carefully established over time.
The update introduces a new tool called "use_figma" that integrates with Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, and several other major coding environments. A companion feature called "Skills" lets teams encode their own design conventions as reusable markdown instructions, so agents consistently apply a product's actual component libraries and spacing tokens rather than generating generic output.
The beta is free for now, with usage-based pricing expected to follow. This fundamentally changes how design and engineering teams can collaborate with AI on production-grade software. (Source: Figma Official Blog)
Huawei's New AI Chip Claims to Outperform Nvidia's H20 by Nearly Three Times
At its China Partner Conference in Shenzhen on March 20, Huawei unveiled the Atlas 350 AI accelerator, built on the company's in-house Ascend 950PR processor. The card delivered 1.56 petaflops of FP4 computing power, a 2.8-times improvement over Nvidia's China-tailored H20 chip, according to Zhang Dixuan, head of Huawei's Ascend computing business.
