OpenAI Launches GPT-5.4: The Most Capable Model Yet for Professional Work

OpenAI released GPT-5.4 on Thursday, March 5, billing it as its most capable and efficient frontier model for professional work. Available in two variants, GPT-5.4 Thinking and GPT-5.4 Pro, the model unifies reasoning, coding, and agentic workflows into a single system for the first time.

GPT-5.4 is also the company's first general-purpose model released with native computer-use capabilities in Codex and the API, enabling agents to operate computers and carry out multi-step workflows across applications. The API version supports context windows as large as 1 million tokens, and OpenAI says the model is 33% less likely to make errors in individual claims compared to its predecessor, GPT-5.2.

For enterprise users and developers, this marks a meaningful step toward AI systems that can genuinely execute complex, end-to-end professional tasks with reduced supervision. (Source: OpenAI)

Zhipu AI Releases GLM-5, a 744B Parameter Open Model Trained on Huawei Chips

Chinese AI lab Zhipu AI released GLM-5, a 744 billion parameter mixture-of-experts model with 44 billion active parameters, a 200,000-token context window, and 77.8% on SWE-bench Verified. The model was trained entirely on Huawei Ascend chips and is released under the MIT license. GLM-5 emphasizes long-running agent tasks, and its release during the same week as GPT-5.4 underscores how quickly lower-cost Chinese challengers are closing the frontier gap, with the lag now measured in weeks rather than months. The use of Huawei chips rather than Nvidia GPUs is arguably as significant as the benchmark results: it demonstrates that the U.S. export control strategy aimed at limiting China's AI development by restricting chip access is encountering increasingly capable domestic alternatives. ChatGPT Enters the Spreadsheet

Alongside the GPT-5.4 launch, OpenAI introduced ChatGPT for Excel in beta, an add-in that brings ChatGPT directly into workbooks to help build and update models, run scenarios, and generate outputs based on cells and formulas.

The company is also launching new ChatGPT app integrations, including FactSet, MSCI, Third Bridge, and Moody's, designed to let teams pull market, company, and internal data into a single workflow.

When evaluated on OpenAI's internal investment banking spreadsheet benchmark, GPT-5.4 achieved an 87.3% score, a significant jump from GPT-5.2's 68.4% result. The move intensifies competition with Anthropic in the enterprise financial services market and raises fresh questions about the future of white-collar analytical roles (Source: OpenAI)

China Makes AI and Quantum Computing the Center of Its Next Five-Year Plan

China's new five-year policy blueprint, announced March 5, prioritizes artificial intelligence and quantum computing as central technologies for economic growth, scientific leadership, and strategic competition. The plan calls for expanded investment in scalable quantum computers, the development of an integrated space-earth quantum communication network, and large computing infrastructure to support advanced AI systems.

Officials also outlined ambitions across humanoid robotics, 6G networks, brain-machine interfaces, and nuclear fusion, framing these as both domestic innovation priorities and a direct response to ongoing technology tensions with the United States. The plan signals that the competition for global AI leadership is no longer just a race between companies but a fully state-level strategic contest. (Source: Router)

AI Has Reached Human-Level Intelligence

In a newly published analysis in Nature, researchers at UC San Diego argued that the vision of human-level machine intelligence Alan Turing outlined in the 1950s is now a reality, urging the research community to approach the development with neither fear nor hype in order to prepare responsibly for what comes next.

The piece, co-authored by philosophers, AI researchers, and linguists, is notable for its publication venue and its restrained, analytical framing, offering a sober institutional acknowledgment of a milestone that has long been debated. Whether one agrees with the framing or not, a journal of Nature's standing publishing this position is itself a significant signal of where mainstream scientific consensus is heading on the capabilities of modern AI systems. Global AI Spending Is on Course to Hit $2.5 Trillion in 2026

Gartner expects worldwide AI spending to increase by 44 percent in 2026, reaching $2.5 trillion, driven by enterprises shifting from AI experimentation to full production deployment. Cloud providers, chip manufacturers, and software platforms are expected to be the primary beneficiaries of this investment surge.

The forecast underscores just how decisively the AI market has moved past the pilot phase. For decision-makers, the more pressing challenge is no longer whether to invest in AI but where to prioritize and how to measure return as these deployments scale across business units. (Source: fool)
