AI & Tech News

Pennsylvania Treasury Bans DeepSeek AI Over Security Fears (Source)

Pennsylvania Treasurer Stacy Garrity has banned the Chinese-owned AI platform DeepSeek from all Treasury-issued devices. This decision was made due to growing concerns about potential privacy and security risks associated with the app.

The ban affects laptops, phones, and any internet-connected devices, as there are fears DeepSeek might be linked to the Chinese government. This connection could potentially allow access to sensitive government or personal data, thus posing a security risk.

Several U.S. states and even some countries like South Korea have taken similar actions, restricting or reviewing DeepSeek's use. This action follows a previous ban by Garrity on TikTok, also a Chinese-owned app, highlighting a consistent concern about data security with Chinese tech. While experts consider the move cautious but potentially wise, they emphasize that all AI tools, not just DeepSeek, pose privacy risks for individual users.

Perplexity AI's Voice Mode Gets a Big Upgrade on iPhone (Source)

Perplexity, an AI search engine, has significantly improved its voice mode on its iOS app. This update brings a more modern design, several new voice options, and better integration with its real-time search features.

Previously, Perplexity's voice feature was basic, but now it offers six distinct voices, making it more pleasant to listen to. While not as emotionally expressive as ChatGPT's advanced voice mode, Perplexity's voices are clear and focus on delivering information efficiently, along with links to sources.

Beyond voice improvements, the app now shows live search results when you ask a question by voice, highlighting its unique blend of AI and search. The update also includes fun visual changes and personalization options like widgets, making Perplexity feel more like a personal assistant than a simple chatbot, showcasing Perplexity's ambition. And it is powered by Claude 3.7 Sonnet.

Tencent's New AI is Super Fast, Claims to be faster than DeepSeek-R1 (Source)

Chinese tech giant Tencent just launched a new AI model called "Hunyuan Turbo S." It's important because Tencent says it's faster than other popular AIs, including DeepSeek-R1.

Hunyuan Turbo S answers questions in under a second. Tencent calls out other models (like DeepSeek R1 and its own older Hunyuan T1) for being slower.

It claims Turbo S is as good as DeepSeek-V3 (which powers the popular DeepSeek chatbot) in areas like knowledge, math, and reasoning.

Tencent says using Turbo S costs much less than its previous AI models. This is likely a response to DeepSeek's low prices.
