Google Launches VaultGemma: The First Large, Privacy-First LLM (Source)

Google Research and DeepMind have unveiled VaultGemma, a 1-billion-parameter open model trained from scratch with differential privacy (DP) — designed to keep user data safe while delivering strong performance.

Traditional large language models risk memorizing private data. VaultGemma solves this by applying carefully calibrated noise during training, ensuring it can’t recall or leak sensitive information. To make this possible, Google researchers developed new “DP scaling laws” that map the trade-offs between compute, privacy, and utility. The result: a model that conserves both atoms and electrons in reactions (figuratively speaking for text) and matches the performance of non-private models from just a few years ago.

Key insights include:

• Bigger isn’t always better → under DP, smaller models trained with much larger batch sizes perform best.

• Compute & privacy must balance → more privacy alone doesn’t help unless backed with more compute or data.

• Open & transparent → VaultGemma’s weights, datasets, and technical report are freely available on Hugging Face and Kaggle.

In practice, VaultGemma doesn’t memorize training data, passes privacy guarantees ((ε ≤ 2.0, δ ≤ 1.1e-10)), and performs comparably to classic models like GPT-2. While there’s still a gap with today’s top non-private LLMs, this release is a major step toward responsible AI… making powerful models safer by design.

VaultGemma could become the blueprint for building future AI systems that balance performance with privacy guarantees, opening the door to safer applications in healthcare, education, and enterprise use.
